Pet owners love being greeted at the door by their furry companions — but coming home to see the sofa in chunks on the floor amid the smiling jowls of our pet isn't the welcome we hope for.

"We all love spending time with our dogs, but we need to leave them at home alone sometimes," says certified dog trainer Laura Roach of the pet care franchise Camp Bow Wow. "Nobody wants to come home to chewed-up shoes or ripped furniture. A tired dog is a good dog, so it's important to give them exercise and socialization."

• If traveling by car, the experts at the ASPCA recommend using a well-ventilated crate or carrier. Make sure it’s large enough for your pet to move around in. It can help if you let your pet get used to the carrier before you leave.

It's staggering to think that each year an estimated 5 to 7 million companion animals find their way into the care of animal shelters like Pet Connection Programs Inc. across the entire United States.

Buffalo Bandettes to Lead Pet Connection’s Tails on the Trails Dog Walk Event

Three members of the Buffalo Bandettes dance team will lead two- and four-legged walkers participating in the 7th annual Tails on the Trails dog walk to benefit Pet Connection Programs Inc. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at the Como Lake Park casino in Lancaster.

Immediately following the walk, the Bandettes will be available to sign autographs and pose for photos for a donation to Pet Connection. Other highlights of the event include dog agility and Good Citizen demonstrations, canvas dog paintings created by your dog,   dog contests, a wide variety of vendors and even a pet psychic! Additionally, there will be a caricature artist, air brush and face painting, artistic balloons and a pet blessing at 10:30 a.m.

Dog ' N Suds Day to Benefit NYS Citizens Against Puppy Mills

Canine & Co., 5952 Transit Road, Depew, will host a Dog ' N Suds Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 3.

Baths will be $10 and $15, and appointments may be made by calling 681-0063.

The day will include a basket raffle, activities for children, food and dog contests. Area rescues also will be available with canines for adoption.

Proceeds will benefit NYS Citizens Against Puppy Mills.
