DEPEW, N.Y.- Coming off a season that saw the Depew Wildcats finish 8-2 and losing to Alden in the Section VI title game at Ralph Wilson Stadium, the football team will look a bit different during this upcoming season.
One of the biggest changes to the team comes with the coaching staff as Dan McGrath is no longer the head coach. Brian Wilson takes over the reins and will spend his first season as the Depew head football coach this fall. Wilson has spent several seasons with the school and is ecstatic about his new opportunity.
"It's a lot of history and tradition here at Depew which I've been able to be a part of for the last 12 years and to be able to take over the reins of the varsity football program, now, it's extremely exciting," Wilson said.
The Wildcats will bring back six starts on both offense and defense from last season, but have a few holes to fill on both sides of the ball. Wilson says he expects the team to be as strong as ever up front as they will have some big bodies on the line.
We expect Mike Lamb at 6 7, 315 pounds and Robert Buono who will be our senior leader up front on the line this year at 6 foot and 255 to carry the load up front," Wilson said.
Wilson knows that his team will have to adjust with new players filling in, but says he is confident that Depew has talent to rise up. "We challenge our players to step up and be ready. When your time comes, you're ready to go and I don't see why these young men would approach it any differently...We have guys that are ready to step up," Wilson said.
The Wildcats will play another difficult schedule this season, and Wilson knows it. The new coach says he is going to have to work hard each week to prepare for some of the tough opponents that are on the schedule every year. "We play in the B-East and we call it the Beast and we don't joke. It's a tough schedule and it's challenging," Wilson said of the teams conference.
The Wildcats will open up their season on August 31 as they play host to Albion High School at 7:30 pm.
