Exercise has been identified as a key component of aging gracefully, and has been linked with not only improved physical health but also better cognitive performance. The maintenance of fully functioning joints is an important part of enabling active seniors to participate in health-promoting athletic activity, experts agree.

Loss of a child to addiction disrupts natural order

When a couple make the decision to have a child, a natural plan begins to fall into place. With great anticipation they wait for that happy plan to become reality — birthdays, elementary school, high school, college, marriage and eventually grandchildren. Never does that plan include the devastating loss of a child due to addiction.

Day after day we hear about opiate-related deaths in our region and across the country.  Children are dying outside of the “natural order,” and when it occurs it sends people into a tailspin. We’re just not supposed to outlive our children.

While there is really no “getting over” such a loss, you can begin to integrate it into your life. It’s important to understand that grief is a long journey and finding normalcy takes time. You don't wake up one day and everything's good again.

Keep the Streets Safe this St. Patrick’s Day: Don’t Drink and Drive!

Keep the Streets Safe this St. Patrick’s Day: Don’t Drink and Drive!

With fun parades, a large Irish community and no shortage of pubs in which to celebrate, St. Patrick’s Day is a huge event in Buffalo and Western New York. But when excessive alcohol becomes part of the equation, St. Patrick’s Day can quickly turn tragic.

As one of the country’s most popular holidays, St. Patrick’s Day has long celebrated the roots of 34.2 million Americans with Irish ancestry, and many more who just want to partake in the festivities. However, did you know that in 2014 there were 18 people killed in drunk-driving crashes on St. Paddy’s Day? This year, if you’ll be drinking alcohol, remember: Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving!

Improving Indoor Air Quality Can Improve Your Overall Health

Improving Indoor Air Quality Can Improve Your Overall Health

Have you ever stopped to think about the quality of the air you’re breathing? While air quality is usually out of your control when you’re outdoors or in a place of business, you can most definitely do something about the air you breathe in your home.

There are many things that can contribute to poor air quality, especially in heavily insulated homes that can trap air inside. Following are just a few of the many causes:
• Inadequate fresh air supply and/or poor ventilation system maintenance.
• Pollutants given off by building or furnishing materials.
• Pollutants from standard household items such as cleaning products, appliances, pesticides, and off-gases from new materials.
• Microorganisms or other biological contaminants.
• Contaminants brought into the building from outside, such as exhausts from sanitary stacks, boiler stacks, natural gas vents or flues.

Drug Epidemic Increases Need for Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselors

Drug Epidemic Increases Need for Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselors

The facts are clear, and very disturbing — the region’s drug epidemic is worsening by the day. In fact, during a recent 24-hour period, 10 heroin overdoses were reported in Western New York.

“With the increase in drug addiction comes the need for more qualified healthcare professionals to help handle the problem,” said Monica Farrar, director of The Resource Training Center in Amherst. The nonprofit organization offers the 350 hours of chemical dependency education required by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services to become a Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC). They also offer individual classes for those who are re-credentialing.
