Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market to Kick Off 17th Season on Saturday, May 9

 

An enhanced EBT program, three new vendors, talented local entertainers and two Wellness Weekends will highlight the 2015 season at the Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market. The selling season kicks off on Saturday, May 9, and runs through Saturday, Nov. 28. Hours at the open-air venue in Buffalo’s historic Elmwood Village are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine. 

A program of the Elmwood Village Association, the market features more than 40 vendors selling fruits, vegetables, baked goods, organics, fresh meat, cut flowers, wine, craft beer, eggs, dairy, honey, cheese and much more. Products available at the market are always fresh, seasonal and local. New vendors in 2015 include K&B Farm, Kindred Kreek and Niagara Distilling Company.

Karen Calandra, author of “Lose the Sugar, You’re Sweet Enough,” will visit Dog Ears Bookstore & Café, 688 Abbott Road, Buffalo, for a book-signing event from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 16.

“Lose the Sugar, You're Sweet Enough” is an easy-to-read guide to help reduce sugar cravings, lose weight and transform your health for life, according to the author, a Registered Nurse and Certified Holistic Health Coach who has seen the devastation of disease and poor dietary habits. Calandra believes that by eliminating processed foods, foods high in sugar and making better food choices daily, it's possible to prevent and heal disease.

Land Conservancy to Host Wildflower Hike at the Niagara Escarpment Preserve

 

Spring is finally here and the Western New York Land Conservancy is hosting a wildflower hike at the Niagara Escarpment Preserve to celebrate its arrival. The hike will take place on Saturday, May 2, from 4 to 6 p.m. The Niagara Escarpment Preserve is a 36-acre property on Leete Road in Lockport, protected by the Land Conservancy in 2011. It is rich in flora and fauna because of its location on the Niagara Escarpment, a unique rock formation that extends 750 miles across Ontario and into Wisconsin.

ROC ’n to Spring, an event to benefit the nonprofit Rural Outreach Center (ROC), will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at the Elm Street Bakery, 72 Elm St., East Aurora. The ROC serves the rural poor in southern Erie County, working with individuals and families to help them become self-sustaining.

West Seneca’s Outdoor Farmers’ Market to Return on May 14

 

Main Street Marketplace, West Seneca’s popular open-air farmers’ and food producers’ marketplace sponsored by the Western New York Federal Credit Union, will return for its second season on Thursday, May 14. The weekly event will take place on Thursday evenings through Sept. 3 on the grassy hill at the corner of Union Road and Main Street, next to West Seneca Town Hall.

The outdoor venue will feature approximately 20 full-time (16-week) and 10 part-time (eight-week) vendors selling a wide variety of products. For updates on participating vendors, please visit Main Street Marketplace, West Seneca on Facebook.
