If you spend a large portion of your day sitting, you're not alone. Inactivity is one of the key factors contributing to the nation's high rate of obesity and its related health effects. Research shows 50 to 70 percent of people spend six or more hours a day sitting, and 20 to 35 percent spend four or more hours a day watching TV.

Elmwood Village Farmers Market to Welcome 18th Season on Saturday, May 7

Several new vendors, talented local entertainers, community group informational tables, three KidBiz appearances and two Wellness Lanes will highlight a fun-filled 2016 season at the Elmwood Village Farmers Market. The selling season kicks off on Saturday, May 7, and runs through Saturday, Nov. 26. Hours at the open-air venue in Buffalo’s historic Elmwood Village are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine. 

The market will once again start the season on the east side of Elmwood Avenue for the first four to six weeks before moving across the street to its usual location on the west side of Elmwood Avenue. This has become an annual practice for the purpose of grass recovery.

West Seneca Farmers’ Market to Return on May 12 with More Entertainment, Family Fun Zone

Main Street Marketplace, West Seneca’s popular open-air farmers’ and food producers’ marketplace sponsored by the Western New York Federal Credit Union, will return for its   third season on Thursday, May 12. The weekly event will take place on Thursday evenings through Sept. 1 on the grassy hill at the corner of Union Road and Main Street, next to West Seneca Town Hall.

Dog Ears Bookstore Offers Free After-school Homework Help Program

The Enlightenment Literary Arts Center at Dog Ears Bookstore & Café is now offering a free After-school Homework Help Program targeting different skills each day. The program offers ELA homework assistance, reading comprehension passages, vocabulary enrichment, test-taking strategies, organizational skill building, study skills, and peer tutoring with Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School and Mount Mercy Academy students.

Assistance is offered for students in grades three through five from 3 to 5 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays. Peer tutoring is the focus on Monday, and New York State test prep skills with certified teachers on Tuesday.

Students in grades six through eight can receive assistance from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, with peer tutoring featured on Wednesdays and New York State test prep skills with certified teachers on Thursday.

Greater East Aurora Chamber Plans Annual Health LIVE Event

The Greater East Aurora Chamber of Commerce’s second annual “Health LIVE! Jump into the Healthy Zone” event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at the Healthy Zone Ice Rink on Riley Street in the village.

“Health LIVE! is a fun and interactive family event to promote health and fitness,” said Gary Grote, executive director of the Greater East Aurora Chamber. “In addition to demonstrations and fun activities for all ages, we’ll have many vendors on site to provide helpful information and answer any questions you may have.” 

Additionally, visitors will receive a “passport” that will be stamped when they visit various attractions and booths during the event, with completed passports eligible for prizes!

Main Street Marketplace to Host Community Groups Each Week

Main Street Marketplace, West Seneca’s 16-week farmers’ market sponsored by the Western New York Federal Credit Union, will provide a free informational table each week to a local community group. The market runs from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays on the grassy hill at the corner of Union Road and Main Street, next to West Seneca Town Hall. In the event of bad weather, the market moves into the parking lot in front of the West Seneca Ice Rink.

West Seneca Farmers’ Market Announces Entertainment Schedule

Main Street Marketplace, the 16-week open air farmers’ market that returns for its third season on Thursday, May 12, has released its entertainment schedule for the 2016 season! Entertainment is scheduled from approximately 5:30 to 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

The market takes place Thursday evenings from 4 to 7:30 p.m., rain or shine. When the weather cooperates, it is held on the grassy hill at the corner of Union Road and Main Street, next to West Seneca Town Hall. When the weather is less than cooperative, the market is moved into the parking lot in front of the West Seneca Ice Rink. Parking is plentiful, but walking and biking are encouraged! Feel free to bring a chair or blanket for your comfort while enjoying the local entertainment.
