Preventing Falls is the Topic of Rural Outreach Center Event

Preventing Falls is the Topic of Rural Outreach Center Event

Did you know that falls are one of the most preventable causes of injury for older adults? In fact, one out of three adults will fall this year but only half of these individuals will mention it to their doctor. And, falling once greatly increases the risk of falling again.

This will be the topic of a rescheduled event to be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 11 at the Rural Outreach Center, 730 Olean Road, East Aurora. Karen Shalke, an occupational therapist and community liaison for Catholic Health’s Living Independently for Elders program at the Our Lady of Victory Senior Neighborhood, will discuss many simple steps that can be taken to prevent falls. The event is free and open to the public.

Land Conservancy to Host Talk About the Salamanders’ Big Night

Land Conservancy to Host Talk About the Salamanders’ Big Night

The Western New York Land Conservancy is hosting a special talk with Twan Leenders, president of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute and expert herpetologist, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23 at Grand Island Town Hall.

Each spring, salamanders have a “big night” where they all — that’s right, all of them at once — come out of their forest homes and migrate back to the seasonal woodland pools where they were born. They breed at these same pools. The public is invited to come find out more about these quiet but amazing amphibians and how we can help with their survival.
