Elmwood Village Farmers Market adds two dates with the Buffalo Philharmonic String Quartet

Local entertainment — including two special appearances by the Buffalo Philharmonic String Quartet — will be among the highlights of the 2017 Elmwood Village Farmers Market, which will take place every Saturday from May 13 through Nov. 25 at the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Bidwell Parkway in Buffalo’s historic Elmwood Village.

The market will feature entertainment from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each week, unless otherwise noted. Following is the 2017 lineup, subject to change and weather conditions.

May 13: No Illusions, Acousticopia

May 20: Tina Marie Williams, David Adamczyk

May 27: Chris Jones, Porcelain Train

June 3: Nickel City String Band, Rockabilly Steve and BR3

Dog Ears Bookstore Adds Delicious Twist to Annual Gala

The ninth annual Dog Ears Bookstore Gala will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at the Buffalo Irish Center, 245 Abbott Road, South Buffalo. This year’s theme is “Buffalo’s Small Plate Debate,” and approximately 25 amazing local restaurants will be on hand to compete for the title of “Best Appetizers in Western New York!”

Providing musical entertainment will be the Charlie O’Neill Unplugged Club, the Grace Stumberg Band and Jay McDonnell. Beer and wine will be included in the ticket price, including a special beer-tasting event by Certo Brothers Distributing. Judging the Small Plate Debate will be South District Councilman Christopher Scanlon, WGRZ-TV personalities Kevin O’Neill and Maryalice Demler, and Buffalo Bills great Steve Tasker.

Community Groups to Host Informational Tables at Elmwood Village Farmers Market

The popular Elmwood Village Farmers Market returns to the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Bidwell Parkway in Buffalo’s historic Elmwood Village on Saturday, May 13, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The outdoor market will take place every Saturday, rain or shine, through Nov. 25.

Each week, three different community groups will host an informational table at the market. The following groups are on the schedule for the 2017 season: 

May 13: West Side Community Services, United Healthcare, The Friends of the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter

May 20: Allentown Industries, Big Big Table Community Cafe, Lexington Co-op

May 27: D'Youville College School of Pharmacy, Massage & Mindful Health By Erin, The Friends of the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter

Explore Buffalo Plans African-American Heritage Tour

Explore Buffalo is honored to be partnering with the Colored Musicians Club and the Michigan Street Baptist Church for the Michigan Street African-American Heritage Tour. 

African-American history in Buffalo is centered in the neighborhood surrounding the Michigan Street Baptist Church. Join Explore Buffalo for a tour of important locations in this neighborhood and to learn about the major milestones in African-American history in Buffalo, as well as how this affected national history. Buffalo has played a major role in African-American history, from the days of the Underground Railroad to the formation of the Niagara Movement, a precursor to the NAACP. 

This unique tour includes an interior tour of the Michigan Street Baptist Church, Nash House Museum and the Colored Musicians Club Museum, three important landmarks in this neighborhood.

Ladies First Jazz Big Band to Perform at Annunciation

The Church of the Annunciation, 7580 Clinton St., Elma, will host a concert featuring the Ladies First Jazz Big Band at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 6.

The Ladies First Jazz Big Band is a 16-piece all-female group formed by bassist Jennifer May. The band has roots as a six-piece ensemble that started in 1994. Ten of its current members will be performing at the Church of the Annunciation.

The band has performed from Jamestown to Rochester, including concert venues such as the Tralf Music Hall and Riviera Theatre, and events including the M&T Noontime Summer Concert Series, Canal Fest and Taste of Buffalo.

A pre-concert event will take place in Annunciation’s Selbert Hall beginning at 6:30 p.m. May 6. Guests are invited to bring their own beverages and snacks.

Full Summer Season Kickoff Planned at Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village

Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village, located at 3755 Tonawanda Creek Road in Amherst, is proud to announce a full May calendar celebrating the season opening! 

Free Farmstead Thursdays, made possible through funding by M&T Bank, will begin Thursday, May 4. Admission is free for all to enjoy from 4 to 8 p.m. and offers visitors access to family-friendly educational programming, demonstrations by costumed historic interpreters, guided tours of the historic village and farmstead, and 20,000 square feet of curated exhibit space. Free Farmstead Thursdays run May through August.

Annunciation to Host Chris Wilson Concert

The Church of the Annunciation, 7580 Clinton St., Elma, will host singer and songwriter Chris Wilson for a songs of faith concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 28.

A New York native, Wilson has gained celebrity status for his vocally driven songwriting and passionate live performances. His career brought him to Los Angeles for a brand new MTV show called “The Cut,” where he became one of only 10 artists to win their way to the finals from a field of 160 competitors and over 10,000 hopefuls from around the world. Wilson went on to win MTV’s Viewers Choice Award for his performance in the finals.
