Buffalo to be Featured on the Travel Channel

The Travel Channel will feature Buffalo, New York on its new television program, “Off Limits.”  Explorer and history buff Don Wildman is delving into the forbidden, hidden and unseen spaces across America.  The Buffalo, New York episode airs nationwide on Monday, June 27th at 9pm   

For over a century Buffalo, New York was a key player in powering America through the industrial revolution. Its natural wonders, like Niagara Falls, and its strategic location along the Great Lakes made it a powerhouse for the growing American empire. Host Don Wildman will get passed the gates, crawl into the dark tunnels and climb on top of its crumbling mega-structures to get a glimpse at Buffalo’s glory days. Just east of Buffalo he will unearth the ingenious engineering behind the Erie Canal.

Eat Drink Local Week Puts Focus on WNY Harvest

Edible Buffalo is proud to announce the first ever New York Statewide Eat Drink Local Week June 24 through June 30, 2011, a restaurant week with a mission! With the harvest season in full swing, Edible Buffalo along with seventeen local restaurant and winery partners will be celebrating the local food chain by promoting menus using ingredients sourced from local growers and artisan producers.

“Many of our restaurant and winery partners already use locally sourced ingredients on their menus, so this is an opportunity to showcase their efforts,” says Lisa Tucker, publisher of Edible Buffalo. “We also want to continue to make the connection between farm and plate for consumers. With over 7500 farms in the eight county region, we cannot afford to ignore how important local agriculture is to our food economy.”

With Memorial Day weekend right around the corner, many people will be hosting backyard barbecues. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is reminding residents to follow important fire safety tips so that they can enjoy a safe summer season. 

“The outdoor cookout season will soon be in full swing.  Unfortunately, a barbecue grill could start a fire if certain safety rules are ignored,” said Firemen’s Association of the State of New York President David Jacobowitz.  “It’s important to position the grill far away from siding, deck railings, trees and other flammables. When gatherings involve children, it’s critical that a child-free zone of at least three feet is established around the grill.”

Susan G. Komen WNY Race for the Cure® Kick-Off Luncheon

 Determined to save lives and end breast cancer forever, the Western New York Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® will host their Kick-Off Luncheon for the 11th Annual Susan G. Komen Western New York Race for the Cure on Wednesday, April 6th, 12 pm at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.  

The 2011 Komen WNY Race for the Cure will take place on June 11th in Delaware Park; over 8,000 are expected to attend this year’s race.  As a part of the Kick-Off Luncheon the Komen WNY Affiliate will officially award 8 grants totaling $431,858 to community programs providing breast cancer services in the Western New York area.

“To meet needs right here in our community, this year’s grant slate specifically addresses the underserved population in Western New York” said Jackie Mordaunt, Executive Director of the WNY Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

National Start! Walking Day is April 6th!

National Start! Walking Day is April 6th!  The American Heart Association asks all American’s to become physically active by walking. Everyone is encouraged to bring their sneakers to work and take at least 30 minutes out of their day to get up and walk. It’s a great way to start your journey towards a heart-healthy lifestyle.

Take a stand against heart disease and take a walk for 30 minutes next Wednesday, April 6th.
