A Cheektowaga Central High School graduate has sung her way to the top of an international songwriting competition.

Lisa Racki Barrett, who graduated in 1986, was voted Female Artist of the Year in the 2013 Clays Country Music Awards, which was sponsored by Clays Country Radio, after her music was featured for several months and listeners casted their votes online.

While her music continues to be aired by the station, Barrett also will receive a trophy for her accomplishment. She also has been asked by Clays' newly crowned Songwriter of the Year, JT Hollis, to record a duet with him in the near future.

Burchfield Nature & Art Center Names Winners of Pie Contest

Some of the best area bakers competed at The Burchfield Nature & Art Center Saturday, Oct. 6, when they shared their homemade pies in an annual contest, in a prelude to the center's Fall Festival.

The judges, Ray Weimer of West Seneca Rotary; Jan Dalbo of the West Seneca Board of Education; and Joe Lorigo of the Erie County Legislature, rated each pie on appearance and taste.

All the entries were delicious, according to the tasters, but in the end only three could emerge victorious.  Diane Wright took first prize for her blueberry pie; Deborah Asfour won second place with a very berry; and Paul Shemkovitz took third place for his pineapple pie.

To the delight of hungry audience members, pies were available for purchase after the winners were announced.
