In an effort to ensure that Bryce Buchholz didn’t die in vain, his family and friends are working to establish a BMX/skatepark in the youth’s honor in the Village of Lancaster.

Bryce, 14, died May 3 after he was struck by an alleged drunk driver while riding home on his Sunday Orange Crush BMX bike. Riding was one of Bryce’s passions, so family and friends hope to raise enough money for the park so area youth can ride safely.

“Bryce was loved by all, and had a way of making anyone he came in contact with laugh and smile,” reads the website in Bryce’s honor, www.flyhighridefreebryce.com. “Our community has rallied together to try and make a safe place for our kids to ride.”

In order to raise the $150,000 required to build the park, several fundraisers are under way:

  • BMX bike raffle: Tickets are on sale for a chance to win a Sunday Vapor Spark or MirraCo Bronson bike. The winners will be announced during Light Up Lancaster on Saturday, Nov. 24.
  • Bounce 4 Bryce: Join us at Sky Zone on September 22nd. For kids 10-16 (limited to 138 jumpers). $25 ticket  includes 2 hours of jumping, 1 bottle of Gatorade & pizza. Call 206-3300.
  • Buchholz Family Memorial Golf Event—October 13th t the Chestnut Hill Country Club at 1330 Broadway in Darien Center.  Cost will be $85 per person which will include golf, lunch, steak dinner, beer, pop and a prize for each golfer.  It will be a 4-Man Scramble with prizes. ontact John Buchholz at (716) 574-3890 or jbuchholz@roadrunner.com.
  • Dairy Queen Grill and Chill Orange Julius sale: The business at 6711 Transit Road, Lancaster, will donate all the proceeds from a $1 Orange Julius sale from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. to the memorial Bryce Buchholz Memorial Fund.
  • Donation jars at select Dunkin Donuts locations.

Donations also are being accepted through the Bryce Buchholz Fund at First Niagara Bank.
